Notes:

Leut Col Matthew Van Buskirk was born to parents Lorenzo Dow VanBuskirk and Louiza Brown on 1 Jan 1835 in Beekmantown,Clinton, New York. He had one brother Albert born 20 Mar 1841 and died in the Civil War 16 May 1864 at the battle of Drurys Bluff, Virginia. Matthew married to Helen Caroline "Nellie" McGiven July 18, 1866. They were parents of 8 children Harry, Minna, Ida, Flora and Cora(twins), Grace, Frank and Irving. Flora died same day of birth, Frank died age 7. No death or burial records found for Flora or Frank.

Hardin Township
Colonel Mathew Van Buskirk, general merchant, established his business in September, 1865. When he began business, he dealt for a time in boots, shoes and crockery. He afterward added dry goods, etc., to his stock, and is now doing a general merchandising business. Colonel Van Buskirk was born in Clinton county, N. Y., January 1, 1835. He left home in 1856, and went to Illinois, where he lived one year in LaSalle, and then removed to Polo, in that State. He enlisted, in September, 1862, in the 92d Regiment, Illinois Infantry. On the organization of Company E of that regiment, he was made its Captain. In February, 1864, he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment, and had command of the regiment from October, 1864, until the close of the war. He was in active service during his entire term of service in the army, participating in a large number of battles, including the desperate battle of Chickamauga, and many others almost as severe. His regiment belonged to the 14th Army Corps, and participated in the full Atlantic campaign, and also in Sherman's march to the sea. In 1863 his regiment was mounted, and served as cavalry during the rest of the war. Colonel Van Buskirk came here in July, 1865, and established his present business in September following.
As family members we were privileged to serve Matthew by obtaining a grave marker to honor him and his service.

Matthew married Helen Caroline "Nellie" McGiven on 18 Jul 1866 in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa, USA. Helen was born on 9 Dec 1847 in , , New York, USA; died on 26 Sep 1928 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA; was buried in Chatsworth, Los Angeles County, California, USA, Oakwood Memorial Park.
