Notes: Richard's ancestry is uncertain. There is some evidence that he was the son of Sir James Bowen of Llwyngwair, Pembrokeshire, Wales, who in turn could claim decent from the Vaughan, Dalton, Strandling and Gamage families and King Edward III. This claim rests on the family tradition that the Bowen arms were carved in Richard's gravestone which is now lost. Richard's great grandson, Dr. Jabez Bowen, had the Bowen arms carved in his wife's gravestone in 1754 when she was buried in the same cemetery as Richard. Dr. Jabez Bowen's father, Dr. Richard Bowen, was 26 years old when the immigrant, Richard Bowen died and was in a position to know of the family's history in Wales.
