- Though U.S. census records, 1870 and 1880, indicate her name was "Mary," she apparently preferred the nickname "Minnie." City Directory listings in 1880s, when she was old enough to be listed, note her as "Minnie." Even her parents, when ordering her cemetery marker used the nickname "Minnie."
She was born on a gorgeous farm in Saranac, near that of both sets of grandparents. According to a letter written by maternal grandmother Lydia Butler Guynup in 1879, the Badgers had tired of farming so Minnie's father Eleazer moved his family to Manchester where he would work in a factory. It was likely far less pleasant than the recruiting advertisements touted. Minnie worked in a factory from about age 14, tragically died of consumption. [1]
