Shirley R. (Rodgers) Virnig, age 86, of Minneiska, died early Friday morning, August 14, 2009 at St. Annes Extended Healthcare in Winona. She was born February 12, 1923 in Minneiska, the daughter of John and Alma (Swanson) Wilson. She was a graduate of Winona High School. She worked in Milwaukee and briefly in Washington, D.C. prior to her marriage. She married LeRoy Rodgers November 28, 1945 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Minneiska. She was a homemaker and he was the postmaster there for several years. Following his death in 1979 she became the acting postmaster, retiring in 1983. The post office was located in the grocery store they owned and operated from 1960-1976. She married Wilfred Bill Virnig March 5, 1983 at St. Marys Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Virnig, Winona, MN; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Michael Virnig, Tucson, AZ, Judith and John King, Minneiska, MN, Theresa and Eugene Kohn, Plainview, MN, Doris Rodgers and partner, Ron Hewuse, Houston, MN; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sigrid Rodgers, Centreville, VA, James and Patricia Rodgers, West Rutland, VT, William and Celeste Rodgers, Buffalo City, WI; 12 grandchildren; step-sons and wives, Michael and Ruth Virnig, Tucson, AZ, Daniel and Carla Virnig, Seattle, WA, Terry and Janice Virnig, Portland, OR, Arden and Patti Virnig, Onamia, MN; step-daughters and husbands, Barbara Virnig, Rochester, MN, Linda and John Kaufmann, Salem, OR, Donna and James Behmke, Columbus, OH, Ann and Donald Hoechst, Spring Grove, MN, Veronica and Gary Ives, Winona, MN, Christina and James Meyers, Eugene, OR; several step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Her first husband, LeRoy, two brothers, Stanley and Woodrow Wilson and three sisters, Phyllis Moore, Helen Siemanowski and Lila Speltz, preceded her in death.
Shirley was a life long member of St. Marys Catholic Church and its St. Anns Society.
A funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:00am at St. Marys Catholic Church in Minneiska with the Reverend Donald Lovas officiating. Interment will be in St. Marys Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 5-8pm where there will be a prayer service at 7:30pm and one hour before the service on Tuesday.
