    LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Nellie M. Papenfuss 89, of La Crescent died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at the La Crescent Healthcare Center.
    She was born in Ashton, Minn., (rural Pleasant Hill Township) on July 14, 1918, to William S. and Ada Mae (McNally) Lee. She married James E. Papenfuss in Dover, Minn., on Oct. 20, 1936.
    He preceded her in death in 1997. Nellie made a lifelong hobby out of her passion for geneology. She loved to collect articles, visit historical societies, cemeteries and courthouses in the process. She was well respected in her field and had been featured in many articles and books.
    She is survived by her two daughters, Lois (Duane) Zenke of La Crescent and Cheryl (Steven) Ruud of Onalaska, Wis.; four grandchildren, Kevin (Connie) Zenke of Dakota, Minn., Hoyt (Cheryl) Zenke of Dresbach, Minn., Barry (Cindy) Zenke of Nodine, Minn., and Travis (Kathy) Zenke of New Hartford, Minn.; 11 great-grandchildren, Dustin, Amber, Grant, Bradley (Alison), Shana (Elliott), Tyler, Brandon, Ashley, Paul, Lee, Angela; five great-great-grandchildren, Kendall, Hector, Jasmine, Jameil, Maya; one sister, Lorraine Stinson of La Crescent; and her special "grand daughter," Letty (Ray) Hornberg and their children, Brian and Scott.
    In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Karen Zenke; two sisters, Carrie Pearl Brennan and Esther Potter; and an infant brother, Lowell Lee.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Crescent. Pastor Paul Ibisch will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway, Minn. Friends may call from 3 until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent, and again from noon until the time of services Monday at the church.

    Nellie married James E. Papenfuss on 20 Oct 1936 in Dover, Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA. James was born on 24 Apr 1915 in , , Minnesota, USA; died on 21 Mar 1997 in La Crescent, Houston County, Minnesota, USA; was buried in 1997 in Pleasant Hill Township, Winona County, Minnesota, USA, Bush Cemetery.
