Facts connected with the life and character of our venerable dead, clothe her history with, to us, more than usual interest.
Mother DOUGLASS' life spanned nearly a hundred years. She entered upon her earthly career before the formation of our Republic, being born April 20th, 1776, some three months before the Declaration of American Independence. She had therefore nearly completed her 96th year.
April 13th, 1794, nearly 78 years ago, she was united in marriage with Mr. George DOUGLASS, with whom she lived about 58 years, and by whom she had eleven children – eight sons and three daughters – five of whom only survive her. Fifty-five years ago, though converted some little time before, she with a few other noble and self-sacrificing once assumed the responsibility of Church organization, and thus was given life to the first Baptist Church in town, with which she remained a true and devoted member. She was intelligent in zeal, consistent in live, and resigned and triumphant in death.
From my first acquaintance with mother DOUGLASS, down to the last visit I made her, a day or two before her release, I saw that she was no ordinary person. Though bowed down with the infirmities of almost a century, she was remarkable for the strength of her constitution, the elasticity of her step, the clearness of her mind, the freshness of her memory, readily calling incidents that occurred all along back up to her earliest girlhood, and not unfrequently would she correct her children as to dates and other matters long since passed, and whenever an appeal was made to the record, she was always "justified of her children."
Her apprehension of justification by faith and the witness of the Spirit was as sensitive as when she first took a view of brighter scenes above. She was hopeful and happy to the last, ready for the angel choir, and when finally she weary wheels of life stood still, they came and bore her away on their snowy wings to her immortal home.

- Another veteran of the war of 1812-14 has passed away, Ezekiel DOUGLASS of Altona. He died Wednesday, Dec. 8th, aged 81. His funeral was attended by a large concourse of people on Friday, at the W.M. Church; the services were conducted by the Rev. L. Prindle, who preached an able sermon from Amos, iv:12. "Prepare to meet thy God." Corporal DOUGLASS was one of five who did not desert on August 28, 1814. A more perfect description on which may be found in No. 9 of the "Chazy Historical Papers."

Milwaukee, Wis., March 10, 1898

Barzilla Douglass, one of Milwaukee earliest pioneers, died yesterday at his home in Broadhead in his ninety-second year. He was one of the first officers of the township of Milwaukee when that township was a part of Brown county Mich. The township was organized on September 7, 1835, and the election of officers occurred two weeks later, the name of Mr. Douglass appearing, with those of Solomon Juneau, George H Walker and the Chases, among the candidates. He was the secretary of the first temperance organization, formed in Milwaukee, and was active in church work.

Mr. Douglass was of Scotch descent his ancestors having come to New England in the Sixteenth century. He was born in Clinton county, N. Y. to which state his parents had removed from Rhode Island. He was born on July 20, 1806. When he was 27 years old he moved with his family to Ottumwa, Ill. thence to Chicago in 1834. and a year later to Milwaukee, He settled upon a claim which is now a part of Bay View and resided there until 1841. when he removed to Prairieville, now Waukesha, where he lived for many years and was highly respected. He was prominent in business affairs and held several offices, having, been at one time sheriff of the county.

Mr. Douglass was three times married His third wife, formerly Abbie Stone, survives him. He leaves one son and three daughters. His oldest son, Harvey, was killed in the Civil war. One daughter, Mrs. Abbie Clinton, resides in Waukesha.

The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 7:45, and interment will be at Waukesha. The body of Mr. Douglass of Broadhead arrived at Waukesha at noon today and was buried at the Prairie Home cemetery in the afternoon. The deceased was a resident of Waukesha in the early 40's and his name appears on the voting list of the first town meeting. 0. P. Clinton of Waukesha is a son-in-law of the deceased.

Notes:

Samuel Davis Douglass was born March 20, 1821, at Chazy, Clinton County, NY, the son of Ezekiel and Allice (Baker) Douglass.

On Sept. 5, 1851, Samuel married Caroline "Carrie" Hutchinson, the daughter of Sherberne Kingsbury and Lovinia (Badcock) Hutchinson of Beekmantown, Clinton County, NY. To this union, four children were born:

Levina Mandana Douglass, born May, 1852, Chazy, NY
Ellery Albert Douglass, born Sept. 21, 1854, Chazy, NY
Charles H. Douglass, born February, 1858, Chazy, NY
Harriet May Douglass, born Sept. 28, 1874 in Rome Twp. Jones, County, IA.

From July 15, 1857, Samuel was active in buying and selling land/property in Chazy, NY. The section of Chazy where this Douglass family lived, changed it's name to Altona, Dec. 2, 1857.

In 1865, Samuel and his family moved to Spring Valley, Fillmore County, MN. In the 1870 census for Spring Valley, Bloomfield Twp. Fillmore County, MN, it lists his name in error,as Daniel. Ellery and Charles were still at home, and
Caroline's father, Sherberne Kingsbury Hutchinson, age 73, was living with them.

In 1872, they moved to Jones County, IA, where they were engaged in farming. Dec. 8, 1875, Samuel is mentioned in the probate records of his father, Ezekiel, as living in Viroqua, Jones County, IA. (The Viroqua post office was in existence from 1873 to 1886, when it ceased to exist. About 1887, it became the town of Morely.)

1880 Census has Samuel and his family living in Rome Twp, of Jones County.
Feb. 22, 1882 and Sept. 13, 1883, Samuel and Caroline bought land in Jones Co.

Following the death of his wife, Feb. 23, 1898, Samuel, whose health was failing, moved in with his son Charles, in Independence, Buchannan County, IA. Samuel had sold one parcel of his land in 1895, and on Dec. 23, 1898, the last parcel was sold.

Samuel died July 6, 1902, at the home of his son, Charles, in Independence IA. In early life he made a profession of religion and united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church. On coming west he was removed from the church of his choice, and never united with any other church, but, held on to his faith and on his death bed said, "The Lord has been good to me."

Funeral Services were held at the U. B. Church, conducted by the Rev. E. Harper, assisted by Elder Potter. He was laid to rest next to his wife, in Olin Cemetery, Olin, Jones County, IA.

Samuel was survived by his four children, all of whom were
present at his funeral.

Notes:

Frederick Arthur Stiles was born August 15, 1873, at Olin, Jones County, IA, the
son of Richard Addison and Levina Mandana (Douglass) Stiles. He lived there
until he was of age.

At age 21, he was working out his first poll tax, so he could vote, by digging a sewer ditch. While he was in the
ditch working, it caved in on him. Rescuers thought he was dead, but they brought him back to consciousness. He had 3 broken ribs.

He went to Louisiana, and cooked on a dredge boat, until he got swamp fever (malaria.) He never fully recovered from it.

When he was 32 years old, he moved to Fredricksburg, IA.
Dec. 2, 1905, he married Mrs. Zipporah Belle (Bayles) Miller. at Fredricksburg. Fred rented a farm and operated a grist mill for 2 or 3 three years before moving to West Plains, MO, to run a saw mill. He moved his family in a
covered wagon from Fredricksburg, to West Plains, MO.

He ran the saw mill for several years, then bought an 80 acre fruit farm, south of Squires, MO. He moved his portable saw mill there and operated it, too. He sold this 80 acres and moved to another farm and operated a canning factory, as well as making sorghum out of the cane he raised. When his health gave out, he brought his family back to Fredericksburg.


Fred and Belle had four children:

When his health failed, he brought his family back to Fredricksburg.

Fred died on Sunday morning, Sept. 3, 1922. His death was due to diabetes. His funeral was held Sept. 5th, with the Rev. George Lauterbach of Sumner, conducting the service.

Survivors include his wife, Belle, of Fredericksburg, his four children, all at home, his mother, Mrs. Lavina Mandana Stiles, and one sister, Mrs. Reuel (Nettie) Pelton,
both of Fredericksburg.

Fred was a sincere Christian, a devout member of the Seventh Day Adventist church,and a devoted father and husband. He was very musical, and could play many instruments, including the trombone and fiddle. He had a
very good high tenor voice and sang at camp meetings,
weddings, etc. He was also, a "jack of all trades,"
a blacksmith, mill-wright, farmer, etc. Everything he did
he did well. He had worked under a German blacksmith for three years as an apprentice.

Fred, was a naturalist, and could tell the names of every tree, shrub, snake, etc. He would take his boys out for walks and teach them about nature. He was a good father,
as well as a good friend and neighbor, always helping those in need.

Frederick married Zipporah Belle Bayes on 2 Dec 1905 in Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa, USA. Zipporah was born on 7 Feb 1876 in Oksaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa, USA; died on 30 Jul 1962 in Maywood, Los Angeles County, California, USA; was buried in Whittier, Los Angeles County, California, USA, Rose Hills Memorial Park.
