Notes:

Richard's ancestry is uncertain. There is some evidence that he was the son of Sir James Bowen of Llwyngwair, Pembrokeshire, Wales, who in turn could claim decent from the Vaughan, Dalton, Strandling and Gamage families and King Edward III. This claim rests on the family tradition that the Bowen arms were carved in Richard's gravestone which is now lost. Richard's great grandson, Dr. Jabez Bowen, had the Bowen arms carved in his wife's gravestone in 1754 when she was buried in the same cemetery as Richard. Dr. Jabez Bowen's father, Dr. Richard Bowen, was 26 years old when the immigrant, Richard Bowen died and was in a position to know of the family's history in Wales. The immigrant, Richard, was literate. (Plymouth Colony Genealogical Helper, Issue No. 3 (1975)).
The estimated birthdates of Richard's children are based upon the average ages in New England for first marriages.

1640 Approximate date came to Rehoboth. He was one of the original proprietors under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Newman.

GBFA p.25: The Reverend Ephraim Wheaton was the 9th son of a clergyman, and is believed to be a descendant of Robert Wheaton who immigrated to Massachusetts in 1636. Ephraim Wheaton lived in Southern massachusetts all his life. One of his descendants is Judge Laban Wheaton who founded the Wheaton Seminary College at Norton, Mass. Among the children of the Rev. Ephraim and Mary (Mason) Wheaton are:

a. Alice (or "Else") Wheaton, b. Nov. 26, 1700; md. #39 Daniel Barney.
b. Freelove Wheaton, b. June 1, 1703; md. #46 Josiah Barney.

"Reed Family History," by Mrs. Nellie Reed Sutherland: "Ephraim Wheaton was the son of Robert Wheaton, an early settler in Rehoboth, owning land there in 1658. In the double Volume 1 and 2 of Arnold's "Vital Records," on page 20, he says Robert Wheaton and Elce Bowen were married about 1636 at Salem, Mass. Elce Bowen was the daughter of Richard Bowen who was one of the early Pilgrims. Robert Wheaton followed Roger Williams from Salem south toward Providence in 1638 or about that date. The Wheaton family has produced many famous ministers and judges. Two of the latter endowed the Wheaton Female Seminary (now College) at Norton, Mass., 80 miles from Taunton and near Rehoboth. My daughter, Jean Sutherland, graduated from this college in 1913. It is about 80 years old now."

I'm descended from them. I have some information on Wheatons, but none on Mary Mason. Do you have more on her line? As for Wheatons, I have Ephraim's parents as Robert Wheaton 1604/5 - 1695/6 and Alice Bowen (abt. 1618 - 1693). Alice's parents are Richard Bowen (abt. 1590 - 1674/5) and Ann (abt. 1606 - 1648). I'm not sure if the dates for Robert Wheaton are correct.

They moved from Rehoboth, Mass. by 1765 to Richmond, N.H. in 1759; thence in 1784/85 to Arlington, Vt.; he served in the campaign of 1758 and in the Revolution; he went to New York state, near Lebanon Springs in 1776. He was one of the first settlers of the town of Richmond, New Hampshire, where he was active in town affairs. He was out with the militia during the Revolutionary War. He married Dec 13, 1753, Hannah Carpenter, born 1732, died Mar 28, 1814. They left Richmond about 1785 and settled in Vermont.

Constant Barney was a private, name on billetting roll, dated 5 June 1758, of men that refuse to march without their billetting, etc. that have not as yet been taken into their proper companies. Amount due Lb.1:01:04 for service, 29 April 1758 to 31 Mary 1758. Also, private in Maj. Richard Godfren's Co. 1758. (NEHGR Register 58:141)

Constant was in Captain Oliver Capron's militia and marched to the relief of Fort Ticonderoga in 1777. Enlisted in 1777 in Capt. Oliver Capron's Co., Col. Ashley's Regt. which marched to the relief of Ticonderoga. Recorded in N.H. state records; was a member of the Committee of Safety and his name heads the list of signers of the Association of Richmond, N.H. He served two enlistments in the N.H. militia.

Martha J Hicks (11/6/99): Constatine Barney, b. Apr 23 1731. He was a military recruiting officer. He was married to Hannah Carpenter on Nov 29 1753.

A private record says he died about 1806, but can he be the one who died 15
march 1822, age 84, at Hartwick, N.Y.? While his chief residence was Swansea, Mass., he spent many years in Scituate and other Rhode Island towns. A complete list of his children is not found.

David Barney died in 1826, aged 86 years." The Cafferty article says David had eleven children. William (the oldest son) married at Richmond, N.H. and possibly remained there. According to the Cafferty article, David had eleven children. William was md. at Richmond, NH and possibly remained there. The remaining ten children probably came with their parents to Tioga Co., NY. The article names the following children: 1- William, md., stayed in Richmond; 2- Margaret, md. Jonathan Norwood; 3- Nathan; 4- David, Jr., b. 27 Apr 1775, d. 27 Mar 1852, md. Zeraiah Beebe; 5- Bennaiah, md. 1795 to Eleanor Earsley; 6- Jehu, md. Tobatha Yates; 7- Canvis, md. --- Cook; 8- Jonathan, lived at Bath, NY; 9- Zimariah; 10- John (poss.); & 11- Luther (poss.) The article also states,"Mrs. Barney was taken before her husband who, in his old age, married a widow Harding. David Barney died in 1826, aged 86 yrs" and was buried on the family plot in Tioga Co., NY. I think the Luther Barney who is recorded in Road District #4 in 1791 is Luther (1757), a third cousin of David Barney (1739). It is known that this Luther Barney moved from Sandgate, Bennington Co., Vt. to Chenango Pt., Chenango Co., NY between 1788 and 1792. Chenango Pt., located at the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers, is near Vestal Township in Broome Co., NY.

Boston Transcript (3)246 lists as dau "Lydia". #9 "Your Family Tree" 13:68 states: David Barney, born in NH came to Apolacom, Susquehanna, Penn in 1800 via Vestal, Broome, NY in 1785. He died in Apolacon 27 Mar ..., aged 76. His wife died 10 Feb 1843, aged 61. After marriage, they moved to Richmond, NH abt 1763, he was "Rep. to General Assembly in Exeter, NH in 1778, and delegate to Constitutional Convention in 1782."

Some sources listed three other children with his 1st wife, Elizabeth; they are Nathan, b. abt 1782; Margaret, b. abt 1784 and John b. abt 1785, which is the same year of David's death date.

From Aunt Betty's notes (Re. "History of Broome County, N.Y.", 1885, p.467 (Vestal Township): It is said that Major David Barney was the first settler in Vestal, who came with his family in 1785; but there is no authentic account of the circumstances, or of his family. It is said he came down the river from Cooperstown in a canoe, and that the craft became unmanageable at some point in the trip and upset, the children narrowly escaping drowning.

John Charles Barney, Jr., Ithaca, NY (1/7/2002): "The History of Susquehanna County," by Emily Blackman, first published in 1873 (1992 Reprint). Here paraphrased is some of the relevant sections:David Barney was the first European settler in Apolacon Township of Susquehanna County. He arrived with his wife (no name in the book) in 1800 in what was then called Little Meadows (now an incorporated Borough in Susquehanna County) from Vestal in Broome County, just across the state line in New York state in 1785. He came originally from New Hampshire. He set up the first farm west of Snake Creek and above Forest Lake in the area, which at that time was apart of Rush township. The farm was in a broad valley on the east side of Apolacon Creek and of the original Native American trail in the area, which became State Road 858. He was a fantastic shot and great hunter, and helped keep many of the early settlers in the area from starving during the long winters. Many of the earliest settlers also worked on his farm, which became a very productive dairy farm and apple orchard, and it is still farmed to this day by other people (Lalor is the current owner). In addition to farming, he started the first saw mill in the area in 1816 and his farm later was the place of the area's first hotel. David died in on March 27th, 1852 in his 77th year. His wife (unnamed) died in 1843 in her 62nd year.David's brother Benaiah arrived in 1806 or 1807 and built the area's first grist mill in 1811. He also served as the first President of the Sunday school. He later moved onto Indiana, where he died.David had several children all born in Apolacon Twp. The first was a son named Darius and he was born in 1801, making him the first European child born in the township. David had three other sons: Jonathon (1809), Harry (1811) and David (?). He had three daughters too listed in the book as follows: Mrs. Richard Collins of Apolacon, Mrs. Jotham Rounds of Vestal, NY and Mrs. Levi Jones of Owego, NY.Darius, Jonathon and Harry spent their whole lives in Little Meadows and died there. The only death noted in the book is that of Darius in 1870. Jonathon Barney became the town doctor, while Darius ran the farm and Harry set up and ran a hotel. All of them were instrumental in creating first the Township of Choconut from the Township of Rush in 1813, the Township of Apolocon from the Township of Choconut in 1841 and finally the Borough of Little Meadows from the Township of Apolacon in 1856. All were involved with the early Methodist church in the area.There is also a great historic map showing the location of all of the Barney residences and places of business in Little Meadows in 1872.

So, lacking other evidence, I am linking Shubael Short with #348 Mary Barney. But we don't even know that he married "Miss" Polly Barney -- she may have been Mrs. Polly (_____) Barney.

Eric Hogan (2/1/00): I'm related somehow to a Walter Barney and an Alice Barney. They should be from the Massachusetts/Rhode Island area. The reason I know this, is my mother has a suitcase full of old photos that have been past down for a couple generations and in them I found a photo of, as above, Walter Barney and another of an Alice Barney. I have no idea my relationship to them however. The linkage to a lot of the people in the suitcase I'm just starting to discover and I'm curious on my relation to the Barney family. Other surnames on my great-grandmother's side which all should be from Mass./RI are Peck, Bliss, Potter, Lane, Read, Smith, etc. The farthest back names I have for Peck and Potter families I'm related to are: Charles Peck (b.1836?- d. 4/9/1894) and Mahala Johnson.= son Albert Peck Potter is Capt. Potter and Mary Read. I have no idea who H.A.L. Potter's parents or siblings are though and maybe this is the missing link. I have found a tombstone of H.A.L Potter (1816 - 1900). I'm not sure how I can find his parents and siblings though.

Aug 1843)seems like that has to be who Sally Larkin Bliss received her middle name. She would seem to be Mary Augusta Potter's (cousin maybe?) according to the birthdates. His father-in-law, Maurice Gilbert Colwell (MGC), having to bury WHB in February 1907 also took ill (see Colwell family records) and died shortly (2-3 weeks) thereafter. Thus, two families lost their respective heads of the households in a very short time period.

Per Glendon Colwell Hall (July 16, 1994) the Colwell/Barney (meat) business had been well on its way to making both MGC and WHB millionaires. The family business died out with these two men and was absorbed by other local businesses.

Glendon Colwell Hall "Colwells of New England" record indicates WHB and Ethel Ora Colwell were married August 28, 1900, while the book "Genealogy of the Barney Family in America" [see editor's note on page 442] indicates they were married on August 31, 1900. Maurice Colwell Barney III looked up records of marriages in Providence, RI for the period 1891-1900, inclusive, and verified that the marriage date is August 28, 1900. The Barney Family Historical Association has corrected thier records too.

John C. Brinker, 80, of Elyria, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017, with his daughters at his side, at Wesleyan Village after a short illness. He was born in Willard and had been a resident of Elyria since 1970, moving from Wellington.
John worked as a Master Mason for Ted Balogh Construction and retired in 2000 from Invacare. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Local 778 and Fraternal Order of Eagles 2051. He loved working in his garden and woodworking.
Survivors include his sons, Daniel A. (Laurie) of Girard and John E. (Angie) of Vermilion; daughters, Anne M. (Charles) Linden of Wellington and Jodi of Elyria; grandchildren, Jessica (Doug) Foster, Cassandra (Derrick) Ault, Martin Brinker, Cory Linden and Jeremy Brinker; great-granddaughter, Isabella Ault; brother, Michael (Jan) of Plymouth; sister Judy (Gerry) Wondrak of Yellowstone, Montana and many nieces and nephews.

William H. Cotter Jr.

William H. Cotter Jr., 82, of Lambert Street, Narragansett, die on Monday, June 6, 1994, in Westerly Health Center, Westerly. He was the husband of Hildegard (Uebach) Wright Cotter.

Mr. Cotter was chief of the state Divsion of Parks and Recreation from 1952 until retiring in 1973.

Born in Providence, a son of the late William and Sadie (Barney) Cotter, he had lived in Narragansett most of his life.

Mr. Cotter was a 1933 graduate of the former Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. In the early 1940's he served as Rhode Island state administrator for the National Youth Administration. He was later the assistant to the general manager of the former Standard Machinery Co., Providence. He had also worked in the URI Athletic Department.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Peter B. Cotter of Warwick; a daughter, Christa Cotter Orsini of Pembroke Pines, Fla; two stepsons, Frederick T. Wright III of New London, Conn., and Stephan B. Wright of Northport, Fla; two stepdaughters, Heidi M. Reardon of Narragansett and Gretchen A. Tingley of Charlestown; two brothers, Walter E. Cotter of Barrington and Richard S. Cotter of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was father of the late William H. Cotter III and brother of the late Alice C. Robinson.

The funeral will be held today at 9 a.m. from the Lawrence E. Fagan Jr. Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Thomas More Church, Rockland Street, Narragansett. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale.

Walter E. Cotter, age 104, of Woodland Road, Barrington, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth "Betty" M. (Martin) Cotter. Walter was always the dignified gentleman, whether in business, social engagements, golf or family matters. A person of moderation, he always had a job, and was often sought after for his dedication, trustworthiness and industry. He never hesitated to speak his mind, but always did so with grace and compassion.

Born in Providence, a son of the late William H. and Sadie (Barney) Cotter, Walter lived in Barrington since 1954. He graduated from South Kingstown High School, went to work in his hometown of Wakefield as a store clerk, then as a newspaper reporter, then as car dealership bookkeeper. He attended Georgetown University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he developed a mail system for the Naval Post Office that succeeded his tenure in the Navy.

Mr. Cotter was hired by Aetna Casualty, where he acquired the enviable knack of tuning out the din of the office, while focusing on the matter of underwriting insurance. In 1956 he formed the insurance agency now known as Burns & Cotter, where he stayed active well into his retirement years. Walter enjoyed tennis, racing on a friend's S-boat, and watching his family grow. An avid golfer, he was a 60 year member of Rhode Island Country Club, where a recent plaque is named for him and his achievement of shooting his age at least once a year from the age of 79 to 91.

He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Lisbeth" C. Herbst and her husband Dave of Bristol; two sons, Walter B. Cotter of Riverside and John M. Cotter and his wife Susan of Englewood, FL; a brother, Richard S. Cotter of Idaho Falls, ID; ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late William H. Cotter, Jr. and Alice "Sis" Robinson.

Walter's firm handshake belied his gentleness. His confident stride belied his humility. His patient wisdom of stating, "There is no penalty for being early!" showed us that we were blessed to have his guidance. Now, in his passing, he is not early, but rather he seems to be right on time.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Church, 108 Washington Road, Barrington. Relatives and friends are invited, and may visit with the family at the church on Tuesday from 9:00 -10:30 a.m. A private burial, with military honors, will be held at St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. Please omit flowers. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Luke's Church
