My great-great-grandmother Sally Larkin (Bliss) was born 5 Aug 1878 in East Providence, RI. (d. 1962 in Attleboro, Ma) Her mother was Mary Augusta Potter (b. 4 Mar 1844) and father Franklin Smith Bliss (b. 19 Jun 1843).

Sarah Larkin Potter (b. Aug 1843) seems like that has to be who Sally Larkin Bliss received her middle name. She would seem to be Mary Augusta Potter's (cousin maybe?) according to the birthdates. Attleboro, Ma is where most of my family is from.

MCB III has RI family photo of including older woman who is believed to be Sarah Larkin (Potter) Barney taken at Camp Cole, RI (about 1910 because MCB, Sr. is about 8 years old in photo.) Sarah is older lady sitting in chair in tent...

Sarah Larkin (Potter)_ Barney is the only CLOSE Barney/Colwell family female who was alive at that time (the other older lady in photo IS Sarah Maritta Rounds, who is thus ruled out...), so per Glendon Colwell Hall (the little boy in front in the picture, who was alive in 1999 and gave the group picture to Maurice Colwell Barney III) the oldest lady is "Grandmother Barney" (grandmother to Maurice Colwell Barney, Sr.)

Eric Hogan (2/1/00): I'm related somehow to a Walter Barney and an Alice Barney. They should be from the Massachusetts/Rhode Island area. The reason I know this, is my mother has a suitcase full of old photos that have been past down for a couple generations and in them I found a photo of, as above, Walter Barney and another of an Alice Barney. I have no idea my relationship to them however. The linkage to a lot of the people in the suitcase I'm just starting to discover and I'm curious on my relation to the Barney family. Other surnames on my great-grandmother's side which all should be from Mass./RI are Peck, Bliss, Potter, Lane, Read, Smith, etc. The farthest back names I have for Peck and Potter families I'm related to are: Charles Peck (b.1836?- d. 4/9/1894) and Mahala Johnson.= son Albert Peck Potter is Capt. H.A.L. Potter and Mary Read. =daughter Mary Potter

[Same] (2/8/00): This looks like it very well could be my ancestor. For example is says "Walter BARNEY, son of William Henry Harrison BARNEY and Sarah Larkin POTTER" My great-great grandmother's maiden name was Sally Larkin Bliss, and her mother was Mary Augusta Potter daughter of H.A.L. Potter and Mary Read. I have no idea who H.A.L. Potter's parents or siblings are though and maybe this is the missing link. I have found a tombstone of H.A.L Potter (1816 - 1900). I'm not sure how I can find his parents and siblings though.

Shields) was born on 12 Jul 1865 in Blossburg, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, USA; died in 1960; was buried in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA, North Burial Ground (Cem. PV001). Per Roger Kenyon [son of Muriel Ora (Colwell) Kenyon] as told to Maurice Colwell Barney III by his cousin, Pamela Ruth (Barney) LaBanca, William Henry Barney (WHB) died after getting drunk and falling in a snowbank, subsequently catching lobar pneumonia (flu).

His father-in-law, Maurice Gilbert Colwell (MGC), having to bury WHB in February 1907 also took ill (see Colwell family records) and died shortly (2-3 weeks) thereafter. Thus, two families lost their respective heads of the households in a very short time period.

Per Glendon Colwell Hall (July 16, 1994) the Colwell/Barney (meat) business had been well on its way to making both MGC and WHB millionaires. The family business died out with these two men and was absorbed by other local businesses.

Glendon Colwell Hall "Colwells of New England" record indicates WHB and Ethel Ora Colwell were married August 28, 1900, while the book "Genealogy of the Barney Family in America" [see editor's note on page 442] indicates they were married on August 31, 1900. Maurice Colwell Barney III looked up records of marriages in Providence, RI for the period 1891-1900, inclusive, and verified that the marriage date is August 28, 1900. The Barney Family Historical Association has corrected thier records too.

William married Ethel Ora Colwell on 28 Aug 1900 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA. Ethel (daughter of Maurice Gilbert Colwell and Sarah Maritta Rounds) was born on 9 Nov 1876 in Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA; died on 10 Jan 1954 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida, USA.
