    E F Harvey, Former fire captain, diesThe body of Ernest F. Harvey, 4, 520 Johnson St., was found at his home Monday afternoon. According to Dr. R. B. Tweedy, Winona County medical examiner, death from an apparent heart attack had occurred sometime Thursday. He had retired July 15, 1945, as a captain on the Winona Fire Department after 25 years of service. The son of William C. and Rachel Grey Harvey, he was born in Winona County Feb. 28, 1890, and had lived in Winona since 1912. He was a World War Army veteran. On Nov. 9, 1918, he married Laura Mae Burke in Winona. He attended the Pleasant Valley Evangelical free Church and was a member of Neville-Uren Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1287, Winona Barracks 1082, Veterans of World War I, and Pickwick Masonic Lodge, A.F. & A.M. Survivors are: his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Marilyn) Monson, Rockford, III; 'five grandchildren; one brother Clyde, Winona, and one sister, Mrs. Otis (Merle) Gross, Winona. One son has died. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Evangelical Free Church, the Rev. Patrick Clinton officiating. Burial will be in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway Minn. Friends may call today after 7 p.m. at Fawcett Funeral Home, Winona. A memorial it being arranged.

    MARILYN M. MONSON, 88 LOVING WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER AND FRIEND ROCKFORD - Marilyn M. Monson, 88, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2009, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. Born in Winona, Minn., on Sept. 21, 1920, the daughter of Ernest and Laura Mae Harvey. Marilyn graduated from Winona State Teachers College and taught school in Pine Island and Austin, Minn. In 1948, she moved to Rockford, and was a kindergarten and first grade teacher at Welsh and Riverdahl schools. In 1949, Marilyn married Charles Monson in Winona, with whom she spent 41 wonderful years before he passed in 1990. She enjoyed family vacations, time at the lake, cooking for family gatherings and baking cookies with her grandchildren. Friends and family remember that she always had a joke to tell, loved watching baseball and identifying birds and wildflowers. She was a member of and volunteered at Alpine Lutheran Church, helping with newsletter mailings and funeral luncheons. She also volunteered at SwedishAmerican Hospital. Marilyn loved to travel, taking trips with family and friends to Scandinavia, Alaska and most of the 50 states. Always an excellent storyteller, in the early '60s she used this skill on a Saturday morning television show, "Come and See," sharing Christian values telling Bible stories for children. For Marilyn, the best times she had were with her family and friends, laughing, talking, sharing and enjoying the company of the ones she loved. Survived by children, Linell Lasswell, Lori (Bob) Fanello and Chuck Monson; grandchildren, Matthew and Katie Fanello, Tia Lasswell, Selena (Jeff) Twitty and Tonya Lasswell; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Lexi Such and Haley Twitty; sisters-in-law, Jo Albin and Shirley Brown; nephew, Scott (Katie) Harvey; several additional cousins, nieces and nephews; and special friends, Helen Mahler, Joy Crittenden, and Mary Lamping. Predeceased by husband, Charles; brother, Fletcher "Bud" Harvey; and niece, Susan Jo Harvey. Thank-you to the Alpine Lutheran Church family for their many visits and prayers and to Provena St. Anne Center nurses and staff for the wonderful care they provided. Service at 11 a.m. Friday, July 24, in Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave., with visitation from 9 to 10:45 a.m.; the Rev. John Heins will officiate. Burial in Arlington Memorial Park.     HARVEY— Ernest Fletcher Harvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Harvey, 520 Johnson street, was recently graduated from the aviation radio school at the U. S. Naval Air station , Jacksonville , Fla., and was promoted to private first class in the marine corps. He received his recruit training at San Diego Calif., after entering service July 23, 1943.

    From the Winona Republican Herald, 22 January 1946, page 8:

    "Phelps school and Teachers college bring to mind that a former Filipino student at the local college was found by Sergeant Fletcher Harvey, U. S. marine corps, now home on leave, to be the leader of a group of guerrilla fighters in the Philippines. Sergeant Harvey met the student while in the Philippines, where the Winona sergeant took part in the campaign. The former Filipino student had led a band of guerrillas during the Jap occupation and after the landing of U.S. forces had been engaged with his band in patrol and mopplng-up work. He inquired of the college and of Winona. Sergeant Harvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Harvey, is on terminal leave after 32 months of service. He trained at Jacksonville, Fla., Quantlco, Va, Cherry Point, N.C. and San Diego before going to the South Pacific. His last assignment was on Kwajaleln. He will report at Cherry Point following his leave. He wears the American theater, Philippines Liberation and Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbons with one battle star, the presidential citation ribbon and the Victory medal. En route from Pearl Harbor, he learned that James Mourning, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Mourning, was stationed on Johnson island and during the refueling of the plane on which he was a passenger on that island, looked Mourning up for a visit."
