Hildred Thurow's Teenage Photo Album

Hildred Thurow's Teenage Photo Album

Hildred Thurow was a somewhat whimsical teenager as evidenced by the photos in her photo album. Most of the pictures were taken either shortly before or during the first couple years of WWI. Later events may have destroyed some of her innocence, but she always seemed be above the fray. The photos are arranged according to the pages Hildred pasted them on. She apparently didn't pay too much attention to the chronological order. On some pages she indicated the date, but not on others. Very few of the individuals in the photos are identified in her album, but I have made some identifications. The original photo album has been donated to the Winona Historical Society.

It's a Long Way to Dakota
It's a Long Way to Dakota
From Page 36a in Hildred's album

The person, who is not positively identified, is probably Hildred.

This picture, although it's not very good as far as quality, is interesting from historical and family history perspectives.

First, it shows the miserable condition of the roads in those days. The picture was apparently taken on what is now U.S. Highway 61 which has been a four-lane road between Winona and Dakota since about 1958.

Secondly, it shows that there was a strong attraction from the Dakota area for Hildred which is, no doubt due to her high school romance with Rolland Harvey Wilson, her classmate whom she eventually married.

Two Girls Frolicking in Yard
From Page 36a in Hildred's album.

Not sure who the two girls are, but the picture was taken at the Thurow residence on Harriet Street in Winona. The picture would, therefore, have been taken some time after 1913.

From Page 36b in Hildred's album.

There is a young female at the wheel and a female and male in the back seat. The female in the back seat may have been Hildred given the hat she is wearing.

The make and model of the car are not readily apparent.

The thing they are posing on seems to be some kind of roller, maybe for paving a road. It could be that the road across Lake Winona (which is now U.S. Highway 61, was first being build.

Hildred does not appear to be in this picture.
